Quantum calculator
Whiplash compensation calculator
The statutory whiplash tariff for road traffic accidents in England and Wales. The figure is computed from the published tariff tables, shown with its full working, and cited to the statutory instrument in force on the accident date.
Rules current to 31 May 2025. Read how these calculators work on the quantum methodology page.
What the tariff is
The whiplash tariff is a fixed statutory scale for whiplash injuries suffered in road traffic accidents. It was introduced by the Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021 under the Civil Liability Act 2018 and applies where the injured person was a driver or passenger aged 18 or over and the prognosis is up to 24 months.
The award depends on two things. The prognosis period in whole months selects the band, and the presence of one or more minor psychological injuries selects the column. The accident date selects the table, because the Whiplash Injury (Amendment) Regulations 2025 uprated the tariff for accidents on or after 31 May 2025.
The tariff does not value anything else. Other injuries from the same accident, financial losses, interest, and the split between tariff and non-tariff elements in a mixed claim all sit outside it and must be assessed separately.

Frequently asked questions
How much is whiplash compensation under the tariff?
For accidents on or after 31 May 2025 the tariff runs from £275 for a prognosis of up to 3 months to £4,830 for a prognosis of over 18 and up to 24 months, or from £300 to £4,975 where one or more minor psychological injuries are also claimed. For accidents before 31 May 2025 the earlier table applies, running from £240 to £4,215, or £260 to £4,345 with minor psychological injuries.
Which claims does the whiplash tariff apply to?
The tariff applies to whiplash injuries as statutorily defined, arising from road traffic accidents, where the injured person was a driver or passenger aged 18 or over. Claims by pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, or people under 18 fall outside the tariff and are valued under the Judicial College Guidelines.
What changed on 31 May 2025?
The Whiplash Injury (Amendment) Regulations 2025 (SI 2025/615) uprated the tariff by approximately 15 per cent on a CPI basis for accidents occurring on or after 31 May 2025. Accidents before that date keep the original 2021 tariff.
Can a court award more than the tariff figure?
Yes, but only in exceptional circumstances. Under the Civil Liability Act 2018 section 5 the court may uplift the tariff by up to 20 per cent. Exceptional is not defined in the Act and is left to the court.
What does this calculator not cover?
It returns the whiplash tariff figure only. Non-tariff injuries, injuries with a prognosis beyond two years, special damages, interest, and the apportionment of mixed tariff and non-tariff awards (Rabot v Hassam [2024] UKSC 11) are out of scope and must be assessed separately.
